Thyroid Disease Services: Expert Care and Medications

According to the American Thyroid Association, it is estimated that approximately 20 million Americans are afflicted with a thyroid disease and that over 12% of the American population will have a thyroid condition within their lifetime. Our body produces two main thyroid hormones, T3 (liothyronine) and T4 (levothyroxine). T3 is the more active and potent form used by the body. However, the thyroid gland produces more T4 which is then converted to T3 to be actively used, so it is important to balance both T3 and T4. Using a combination of T3 and T4 is beneficial and may be the best way to mimic the body’s naturally produced thyroid hormones. Thyroid conditions which may benefit from compounded thyroid most commonly include hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s.

Manufactured Thyroid Medications

Manufactured thyroid medications that are a combination of T3 and T4 are animal derived and not suitable for all patients. Nonanimal derived, synthetic manufactured medications are either T3 or T4 but not in combination and are usually made with dyes and many fillers.

Benefits of Compounded Thyroid

  • No animal side chains due to animal sourcing, so this minimizes the chance of hypersensitivity and autoimmune reactions
  • note that many thyroid conditions are autoimmune related and using animal derived manufactured products can potentially cause additional autoimmune reactions
  • Customized dosing versus one size fits most standard manufactured doses
  • Minimal Fillers, typically cellulose
  • Available in veggie capsules
  • Available in dye-free capsules
  • Available in delayed release formulations versus manufactured immediate release
